In a gripping match at Anfield, Virgil van Dijk shared his thoughts following Liverpool's narrow defeat to Manchester City, which ended 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

The Reds took the lead in the 76th minute, thanks to an extraordinary free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai. However, just moments later, Bernardo Silva struck back to level the score, and Erling Haaland clinched the victory for City with a penalty awarded in stoppage time. Compounding Liverpool's troubles, Szoboszlai received a red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, which means he will be sidelined for the upcoming match against Sunderland due to suspension.

After the match, Van Dijk spoke to Sky Sports, offering insights into his feelings about the game.

On His Emotions Regarding the Match…

In the first half, I felt that Manchester City had a much easier time controlling the ball. We aimed to play more directly, trying to shift the pressure onto their half of the pitch because we understood they were looking to exploit our right side. Unfortunately, I think we didn’t perform well enough during the first half. In the second half, however, we improved significantly, dominating possession at times and scoring what can only be described as a world-class free-kick.

Once we took the lead, it was expected that City would ramp up their pressing game even more, and they managed to equalize. Between their equalizer and the moment leading up to the penalty, it felt like both teams were pushing hard to secure a win. In my view, that penalty ultimately determined the outcome of the match.

On Whether Liverpool Was in 'Complete Control' After Szoboszlai’s Goal…

You can never truly feel in complete control against a team like City. Especially when they’re down 1-0, they tend to increase their pressing intensity. They bring on substitutes who make dynamic runs. If you observe their style of play, they often line up in a sort of 4-4-2 formation with a diamond in midfield, which requires constant communication. For instance, when Antoine Semenyo moves into the center, Milos Kerkez or one of the midfielders must track him closely. Thus, there’s always a need for alertness; it’s imperative to stay sharp. As I mentioned, I might be mistaken, but my impression is that after their equalizer, both teams were fiercely competing to find that winning goal.

On Whether the Reds’ Performance Level Improved…

I’m not entirely certain. It’s a work in progress, as I’ve stated repeatedly. The second half did feel like a slight step up from the first, but we were still not fully in command and could have performed better—should have performed better. Going into halftime at 0-0 gave us a chance to regroup, and we emerged for the second half with renewed energy, scoring the first goal, which does change the dynamics of the game. However, as I said earlier, the penalty moment became the decisive factor, and that’s just the reality we have to face.
