Top 10 Least Reliable Cars and SUVs for 2026 | Consumer Reports Analysis (2026)

Consumer Reports has recently unveiled its annual list highlighting the 10 least dependable vehicles for the year 2026, and the results may surprise some car buyers. This comprehensive analysis is based on feedback from approximately 380,000 vehicle owners, revealing which cars and SUVs are most prone to requiring repairs — often multiple times.

In a report released on December 4, 2025, Consumer Reports examined the reliability of various vehicles, categorizing them from least to most reliable. This year's findings shed light on certain new models that could potentially lead their owners back to the dealership more frequently than others.

The list is derived from reliability data collected through owner surveys, focusing on 20 specific areas where problems can arise. These issues range from minor annoyances, such as trim malfunctions and squeaky brakes, to serious complications involving the engine, transmission, and electric vehicle systems, including the battery and charging setup.

Phil Radford, the president and CEO of Consumer Reports, emphasized the importance of this information during a press release. He stated, "As affordability remains a pressing concern for many Americans amid rising costs across various sectors, from groceries to vehicles, our Automotive Report Card serves as a vital tool. It utilizes advanced testing methods, extensive consumer insights, and trusted expert evaluations to assist individuals in making informed purchasing decisions with their hard-earned money."

When determining an overall predicted reliability score, Consumer Reports places greater emphasis on the most severe issues. Additionally, only vehicles with at least two model years of data from recent years are included in their rankings.

Here are the top 10 least reliable vehicles according to the 2026 report:

1. Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid — Reliability score: 26

2. Honda Prologue — Reliability score: 25

3. Kia EV6 — Reliability score: 25

4. Kia EV9 — Reliability score: 24

5. Mazda CX-90 — Reliability score: 23

6. Genesis GV60 — Reliability score: 21

7. Mazda CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid — Reliability score: 20

8. Chevrolet Blazer EV — Reliability score: 19

9. Rivian R1T — Reliability score: 18

10. GMC Acadia — Reliability score: 14

On the other hand, if you’re curious about the brands that consistently deliver reliable vehicles, Toyota shines at the top of the list, followed closely by Subaru, Lexus, Honda, Nissan, Acura, and Kia.

Jake Fisher, the senior director of auto testing at Consumer Reports, shared insights into the trends observed in their surveys. He noted, "Our findings indicate that a careful and gradual approach to vehicle redesign typically yields better reliability, while rapid changes and new technologies can often lead to unforeseen issues. For those prioritizing reliability in their vehicle choices, it's advisable to avoid newly launched or newly redesigned models during their first production year, as these tend to exhibit the most problems."

But here’s where it gets controversial: do you think consumers should take these reliability rankings as gospel, or should they consider personal experiences and reviews when choosing a vehicle?
