Stokes Admits Errors: Can England Bounce Back in the Ashes? (2026)

Facing the Ashes, England's Captain Stokes Admits Mistakes and Seeks a Reset

It's a bit ironic, isn't it? The Australian voices, in their triumphant chorus, have been telling England to show some humility. After a crushing eight-wicket defeat in the first Test, wrapped up in under 48 hours, it's clear there's work to be done. But even in that defeat, the hosts had their wobbly moments.

Following the first Test loss, Ben Stokes seemed a changed man when his team resumed training. Gone was the 'shell-shocked' captain, replaced by a more conciliatory figure, ready to face the music before the day-night second Test.

Stokes acknowledged the validity of some criticism. He also backtracked on his pre-series comments, where he'd called former players like Ian Botham, Michael Vaughan, and Graham Gooch 'has-beens.'

"I got the words I said there completely wrong," Stokes admitted, looking sheepish. "'Has-beens' is a horrible word. It's the only thing that managed to come out of my mouth at that moment. God, I’m going to be one of those one day. But it’s not at all what I meant by that."

Stokes, preferring one-on-one debriefs, was open about his own leadership, particularly his bowling plans during Travis Head’s explosive innings.

"I could have been a lot better as captain," he confessed. "I am the person who makes decisions about how we go out there and operate and I am the one who gives the plans to the bowlers. I wasn’t as clear as I normally am. The key thing for me is to be completely crystal clear with my bowlers."

But here's where it gets controversial... There's a concern that Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum are overly confident in the target set, despite the fact that batting conditions at Perth Stadium tend to improve after tea on day two. England's collapse after lunch – losing four wickets for 11 runs – was a turning point.

This England batting lineup is a bit fragile. They can be devastating, but they've been bowled out in under 40 overs a concerning seven times since last year.

"We keep it very simple, which is always looking to put the opposition under pressure, but also understanding the moment we need to absorb it. We know we are very, very good at the first bit and there are areas that we can be better doing the second bit."

Stokes also acknowledged the fans, recognizing their frustration. "We know we’ve got an incredible fanbase who come out here and support us," he said. "They want to see us win. We want to win. We’re absolutely desperate. They’re absolutely desperate. We’re all on the same wavelength."

And this is the part most people miss... Not every charge was met with a guilty plea. Mitchell Johnson called England arrogant, a sentiment Stokes didn't fully agree with.

"I think arrogant might be a little bit too far, but that’s OK," said Stokes. "We take the rough with the smooth. Call us whatever you want. I’d rather words like ‘rubbish’, but ‘arrogant’ … I’m not so sure about that. We didn’t have the Test match that we wanted to, but we were great in passages of that game."

Those passages refer to a strong first-innings bowling performance, where Australia was bowled out for 132. However, Mark Wood will miss the second match. Australia has a significant advantage due to their experience in day-night Tests, with a record of 14 played, 13 won. Stokes understands why England's decision to skip the pink-ball warm-up match looks odd, but the conditions in Brisbane and the Gabba support their strategy.

What do you think? Do you agree with Stokes' assessment of his captaincy? Was 'arrogant' too strong a word to describe England's approach? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
