Remembering John Bailey: Ad Legend Behind Iconic Aussie Campaigns (2026)

The advertising world mourns the loss of a true creative legend: John Bailey. His name is synonymous with some of Australia's most iconic and effective advertising campaigns. Bailey, who recently passed away in Singapore, left behind a legacy that continues to inspire.

Bailey's journey began after graduating from Reigate School of Art & Design in 1973 with a BA in Advertising and Design. He started his career as an art director in London before moving to Sydney in 1981.

During the vibrant advertising scene of the 1980s, Bailey made his mark at several top Sydney agencies. At Clemenger, he earned an AWARD Silver Pencil for IBM and two Silver Pencils for Sydney County Council, along with notable work for Birds Eye. His award-winning work at Saatchi & Saatchi was for Crown Corning. At FCB, he won an AWARD Silver Pencil for Steinlager and created award-winning campaigns for Spray n’Wipe. Further, at Leo Burnett, he crafted award-winning campaigns for Dulux.

In 1989, Bailey joined DMB&B as a creative director, later moving to JWT Indonesia as ECD for three years. He then returned to Clemenger Sydney in 1994, staying until 2000. Following this, he launched his own Sydney-based agency, Bailey Daddo Douglas Lees, which thrived for six years.

In 2006, Bailey returned to Indonesia, taking on the ECD role at McCann-Erickson. Within just two years, he propelled the agency to become the second most awarded in local award shows. He then held ECD positions at DDB and Ogilvy RedWorks in Indonesia before returning to DDB Indonesia in 2011 as President Direct and ECD. Finally, in 2021, after a decade at DDB, Bailey established his own agency, Bailey Capel, based in Jakarta.

But here's where it gets interesting: Bailey was not just a creative; he was a creator of culture. He co-created some of Australia's most memorable campaigns, including the beloved "Dougie the Delivery Boy" for Pizza Hut, the long-running Spray n’Wipe campaign, and the Sultana Bran campaign, "Don't tell them it's healthy and they'll eat it by the boxful." These campaigns weren't just ads; they were cultural touchstones.

Bailey's philosophy was simple yet profound: good work builds brands, creates demand, and generates sales. He famously stated, "No matter how good we believe our work is if it doesn’t produce an ROI for a client it can’t possibly be good. After all, that’s what we’re paid to do." He won numerous awards throughout his career, including Cannes Lions, Clios (including Best of Show and Clio Hall of Fame), and several AWARD Silver Pencils.

The question is, in today's fast-paced advertising world, can we still create campaigns with such lasting impact? What are your favorite Bailey campaigns, and why do you think they resonated so strongly with audiences? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
