A bold reminder sits at the heart of our reading: Mary brings light where human happiness often falls short. Pope Leo XIV, celebrating Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, described Mary as awakening in the people of America a joy that comes from knowing they are beloved by God.
In his homily, the pope reflected on Christian tradition’s view of Mary as “the mother of love.” He pointed to the Gospel as showing Mary inviting the world into her life, allowing that life to be transformed by grace. From the moment of the Annunciation, Mary carried joy and, throughout her life, she lifts pockets of sorrow to reveal greater gladness where it is most needed.
This is the spiritual thread Pope Leo highlighted in Guadalupe, where Mary stirs in the people of the Americas a recognition of God’s love for them. He noted that Mary spoke to St. Juan Diego in his native tongue, and in the midst of ongoing conflicts, injustices, and hardships seeking relief, Our Lady’s core message remains clear: “Am I not here, I who am your mother?” She is the voice that resounds with God’s faithfulness and a steadfast presence when life feels overwhelming.
As our Mother, Mary directs us to “do whatever [Jesus] tells you,” and we respond in return, “Yes, Mother, we want to be your true children. Show us how to grow in faith when our strength is weak and shadows lengthen. Help us see that with you, even winter can bloom into roses.”
In a spirit of filial devotion, Pope Leo addressed Mary directly, asking her to teach the world to resist division into opposing camps; to accompany young people as they hold fast to faith; to seek out those who have drifted from the Church; and to strengthen family life.
“Holy Virgin,” the pope prayed, “may we, like you, keep the Gospel in our hearts,” confident that wherever the Gospel is proclaimed, everything becomes more beautiful, restored, and renewed.
Finally, he invoked Mary’s aid for his own ministry as the Successor of St. Peter, asking that he might lead all entrusted to him along the single path that leads to the blessed Fruit of her womb.
In closing, the pope prayed for Mary’s protection to guide everyone toward unity with Jesus and with one another, toward the eternal dwelling prepared for them, where Mary herself awaits.
