Measles Alert in Sydney: A Growing Concern
Measles is making a comeback, and it's time to take action! NSW Health has issued a critical alert, urging residents to be vigilant against this highly contagious disease. With two new confirmed cases in Sydney, the risk is escalating.
But here's where it gets concerning: one case was locally acquired, indicating potential community transmission. The other case, recently returned from South-East Asia, highlights the global reach of this virus.
The risk is real, and it's increasing. Since January 1, 2026, NSW has seen 10 confirmed cases, a worrying trend. If you were at any of these locations during the specified times, be on high alert:
- Granville Swim Centre, Granville, on January 31, 9:00 am - 10:30 am
- St Patrick's Cathedral, Parramatta, on January 31, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
- Woolworths, Granville, on February 3, 3:55 pm - 4:45 pm
- Medicines R Us, Gregory Hills, on February 3, 2:25 pm - 3:15 pm
- Westmead Hospital Emergency Department, February 6-7, 9:30 am - 11:30 am
And this is the part most people miss: a coffee shop visit near Burwood Urgent Care Clinic on January 22, between 8:00 am and 10:00 am, could also have exposed you. If you were there and develop symptoms, get tested!
Symptoms to watch for:
- Fever
- Runny nose
- Sore eyes
- Cough
- A red, blotchy rash, appearing 3-4 days after the initial symptoms
Dr. Conrad Moreira, Western Sydney Local Health District Director of Public Health, advises: "If you've been to any of these locations and develop symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. Call ahead to avoid potential exposure to others." He emphasizes the importance of vaccination, stating, "The measles vaccine is effective, even after exposure, if administered early."
Controversially, the MMR vaccine is not mandatory for all. Dr. Moreira urges those born after 1965 to ensure they've had two doses, especially before international travel. The vaccine is free for eligible individuals in NSW.
Are you up to date with your vaccinations? If unsure, consult your GP or pharmacist. Don't let measles catch you off guard. Stay informed, and share this information with loved ones. Your health is in your hands!
