As the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season unfolds, one question lingers: Is Hendrick Motorsports ready to unleash its full potential at Kansas Speedway? While the legendary team has shown glimpses of brilliance, their overall performance thus far has been somewhat underwhelming. With three drivers ranked fifth to seventh in the series, Hendrick's dominance is yet to be fully realized.
What makes this particularly fascinating is the contrast between their standings and the actual race results. Despite having three drivers in the top seven, Hendrick has managed just one victory through the first eight races, courtesy of Chase Elliott. This raises a deeper question: Are the numbers telling the whole story, or is there more to uncover?
Digging deeper, we find that Hendrick has secured 13 top-10 finishes, but only four instances where multiple drivers finished in the top 10. This inconsistency is a telling sign of their current campaign. In comparison, 23XI Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing have four and two wins, respectively, showcasing a more consistent performance.
Last weekend's race at Bristol Motor Speedway highlighted Hendrick's ups and downs. While Kyle Larson finished a strong third and led an impressive 284 laps, the other three Hendrick cars encountered a plethora of issues. Elliott, who spun twice, including a dramatic spin on the final lap, finished a disappointing 22nd. William Byron, despite his pace, finished five laps down in 30th, and Alex Bowman, returning from a vertigo-related absence, suffered terminal damage and finished 37th.
However, as the series heads to Kansas Speedway this weekend, there's a sense of anticipation. Hendrick has dominated Kansas in recent years, with three of the last four victories. Larson's sweep last year, including a thrilling 0.001-second win in May, showcases their prowess at this track. But since then, Hendrick has failed to secure a win, despite Larson's championship title last year.
Larson's statistics at Kansas are impressive. In his last 10 starts, he's finished eighth or better eight times, leading an astonishing 761 laps. His average running position of 9.6 is among the best in the league, and he ranks highly in speed rating. Elliott, the lone Hendrick victor this season, has also performed well at Kansas, with two wins and a stellar average finish.
Bowman, returning from his vertigo bout, has shown promising results in the Sunflower State. Despite a 28th-place finish last fall, he had a streak of six consecutive top-10 finishes prior to that. His 191 laps led without a win are a testament to his consistency, and his average finish of 14.8 is his second-highest among all ovals.
Byron, the most inconsistent of the Hendrick bunch at Kansas, has still managed to secure nine top-10 finishes in 16 starts. His performance at mile-and-a-half tracks has been solid, leading to a pair of victories. His average position of 12.8 is a notable improvement, and his speed rating is the second-highest in the organization.
In my opinion, all signs point to a potential Hendrick breakout at Kansas. With their recent success at the track and the strong performances of their drivers, this could be the weekend where they finally hit their stride. It's an exciting prospect, and one that NASCAR fans will be eagerly anticipating. Will Hendrick live up to its legendary status and dominate Kansas once again?
