A bold headline: Linn County weighs restarting a nuclear power facility, raising both local interest and questions about the future of energy in the region.
Linn County Planning and Zoning is set to review a rezoning proposal for the Duane Arnold Energy Center during its December 15 meeting in Cedar Rapids. This marks the commission’s first session that will include public comment on the project.
The Duane Arnold Nuclear Power Plant, located near Palo, operated from 1974 through 2020. NextEra Energy has indicated that the primary motivation for reopening would be to supply power to data centers anticipated to establish operations within Linn County.
Residents living nearby have expressed concerns about the potential effects of restarting the plant. NextEra Energy projects a substantial economic impact, estimating a $9 billion boost to the state economy and the creation of roughly 400 jobs. The company also states that the facility would generate about 615 megawatts of electricity, with Google expected to receive around 565 MW and CIPCO, a local utility, receiving the remaining portion.
During an Iowa Utilities Board meeting on November 12, residents voiced worries that energy costs could rise. NextEra contends that rates would not be affected by the plant, while the Iowa Utilities Board notes that the data centers intended to be powered by the facility could push rates higher—though the magnitude is not yet clear.
NextEra aims to have Duane Arnold back in operation by early 2029.
Anyone interested can review the Duane Arnold Energy Center’s application materials on Linn County’s website: https://www.linncountyiowa.gov/1868/Duane-Arnold-Energy-Center. The Planning and Zoning Board will forward its recommendation to the Linn County Board of Supervisors after the December 15 meeting, with the supervisors slated to review the proposal in January. Approval at the state and federal levels will still be required, including clearance from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The December 15 session will convene at 6 p.m. at the Joan Oxley Linn County Public Service Center, Cedar Rapids. Members of the public may submit comments in advance by emailing plan_dev@linncountyiowa.gov.
