In an exciting development for rugby fans, former St Helens scrum-half Lewis Dodd has officially extended his contract with the Catalans Dragons for an additional year, even before he has stepped onto the field for the French team.
Initially, Dodd joined the Perpignan-based club on a one-year contract aimed at the 2026 Super League season. However, he has now committed to staying in France for an extra year, marking a significant milestone in his career.
The 23-year-old player transitioned from St Helens at the end of 2024, signing a three-year deal with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NRL. Unfortunately, his stint there was brief, as he only made six appearances before being released. Dodd's tenure with St Helens was nothing short of impressive; he celebrated three Super League titles, a Challenge Cup victory, and notably kicked the winning drop goal during the 2023 World Club Challenge against the Penrith Panthers.
Dragons head coach Joel Tomkins expressed his enthusiasm about the extension, stating, "I am delighted to extend Lewis for an extra year. He has settled in really well in France and is already a very well-liked member of the squad. This signing gives us some consistency in an important position for the next couple of seasons."
This decision highlights the club's commitment to building a strong team foundation as they prepare for upcoming challenges, but it also raises questions about the dynamics of player transitions between leagues.
