Love found its way to Katie Taylor, and she's embracing a new chapter in her life. In a recent appearance on the Late Late Show, Katie opened up about her break from boxing and the peaceful life she's built with her husband, Sean McCavanagh.
Katie, an Olympic and World champion boxer, revealed that she's savoring the quiet moments in Connecticut, a far cry from the intense world of professional sports. This break from boxing is a first for her in over two decades, since she stepped into the ring for Ireland's inaugural sanctioned female fight at just 15 years old.
"Love snuck up on me," Katie shared, explaining how her dedication to boxing left little room for relationships in her earlier years. But now, she's cherishing this unexpected season of love and life.
However, adjusting to a life without training hasn't been easy. "I have to consciously remind myself not to train as if I'm preparing for a fight," she admitted. Despite this, Katie and Sean are content with their simple life in Connecticut.
Sean, an Irish American, is described by Katie as "one of those Irish-Americans who think they're Irish." Together, they recently explored Katie's hometown of Bray in Wicklow, creating special memories.
Back home for Christmas, Katie is spending quality time with her family and friends, an opportunity she cherishes as it only happens a few times a year. Her relationship with her dad, Pete Taylor, has also evolved. Pete, who was her trainer until 2015, remains an integral part of her life, and their bond has strengthened over the years.
"Family is both complicated and beautiful," Katie reflected, acknowledging the unique dynamics within her family. Her dad's presence, or absence, has been felt throughout her career, especially during her Olympic fight in Rio de Janeiro in 2015, where she suffered a loss against Finland's Mira Potkonen.
That loss, though devastating at the time, became a catalyst for the greatest season of her life. "It almost crushed me, but it opened doors to incredible opportunities," Katie revealed. She credits that loss with pushing her to turn professional.
Beyond boxing, Katie's faith in God is her anchor. "It's my foundation, it gives me perspective on life and helps me make sense of the world," she explained.
As we delve into Katie's journey, it's clear that her story is one of resilience, growth, and the unexpected twists life can bring. What do you think about Katie's path and the role faith plays in her life? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
