Jeff Guan, a rising star in the world of golf, was making steady progress towards the pinnacle of his sport. With two Australian amateur championships under his belt and a PGA Tour debut in the United States, Guan's future looked bright. He had even secured representation by the same management agency as the renowned Spanish golfer, Jon Rahm.
However, fate took an unexpected turn. Just a week after his US debut in September 2024, Guan suffered a life-altering injury at a Pro-Am event. A stray ball struck him in the face, resulting in permanent blindness in his left eye. This incident threatened to derail his promising career.

The incident at the Catalina Club in New South Wales left Guan fearing for his future in golf. But his unwavering courage and perseverance have brought him back to the elite level.
After hitting his second shot from the third fairway, Guan headed towards a buggy, only to be struck seconds later. "I remember the throbbing pain at the top of my left head," he recalled.
Guan was rushed to a hospital in Canberra, where he underwent surgery for a fractured eye socket. The following days were a blur of medical procedures and intensive care.
Doctors advised him to stay confined to his room, a necessary measure to stabilize his eye pressure and prevent further complications. Some days, getting out of bed seemed impossible. The thought of his golf clubs brought pain, not joy.
"Golf has been a part of my life since I was young. To have it taken away so suddenly was mentally draining," Guan confessed. "But I'm grateful for the support I received, and after a few weeks, I started walking and working on my body strength."
Gaming as Rehabilitation
Guan's rehabilitation journey was a series of "little steps" towards recovery. Three months after his second surgery, he cautiously picked up golf clubs again, starting with gentle chipping and putting.
He had to rebuild his swing patiently, and it took another three months before he could take full swings with the driver. "My clubs felt so long, and gripping the club felt awkward," he recalled. "But with practice, I started seeing progress."
Specialists prescribed vision therapy drills to strengthen his right eye and even encouraged him to play console games. Guan battled online opponents on Marvel Rivals, Fortnite, Rainbow 6 Siege, and Call of Duty, adding a fun element to his rehabilitation.
"Gaming helped improve my hand-eye coordination and peripheral vision awareness. It was a welcome distraction, especially since I love gaming," Guan explained.
Playing from the bunkers presented a unique challenge due to his altered depth perception. Guan sought advice from visually impaired golfers around the globe, who reached out to him via social media. Squinting to block out peripheral objects and using the sun's shadow to guide his club improved his sand game.
When it came to putting, Guan's initial readings were challenging. He couldn't judge the contours of the greens accurately. So, he adopted the Aimpoint technique, standing over the second third of the putt to feel the slope with his feet, confirming his visual assessment.
The Comeback Trail
Guan's comeback has been fueled by self-motivation and the overwhelming support of the golfing community. A video message from Ryder Cup star Tommy Fleetwood, whom Guan considers an "idol," was a source of inspiration.
"I'm grateful for the support I've received," Guan said. "It's given me the confidence to keep pushing forward."
Guan's first tournament back was the Northern Territory PGA Championship in August, where he fell short of the cut. But a fortnight later, he finished in a share of 10th place at the Western Australia PGA Championship after an impressive final-day 66.
"I'm focusing on the Aussie schedule for now, but I dream of joining the DP Tour or PGA Tour as a member one day," Guan shared. "It's still early, but earning tour cards is definitely a target."
