Arson Suspected as Homes of Holiday Park Residents Burn Down (2026)

Two Homes, One Tragic Day – But Was It Just a Coincidence?

Two mobile homes in Lancashire, each owned by residents embroiled in a bitter dispute with a holiday park operator, were reduced to ashes within just 90 minutes of each other. The fires, both striking on the same August day at Wyre Country Park, have sparked outrage, speculation, and a fresh round of controversy about what’s really going on behind the scenes.

Andrew Headand and Jonathan Coffey of BBC Panorama report that the two residents, Mike Chesworth and Alison Porter-Garroch, had both previously appeared on an investigative episode of Panorama. The programme uncovered allegations that some residents of the park had been misled and financially devastated—accused of paying life savings for properties they were told could be used as permanent homes.

Exclusive Resorts Ltd, the company that owns Wyre Country Park, forcefully denied any wrongdoing. In a strongly worded statement, the firm accused Panorama of shaping a “false and baseless” narrative that could give the impression the company was involved in the fires. “This suggestion is wholly untrue,” the company said. Yet, despite their denial, one of the fires reportedly raised concerns internally about a possible connection to an insurance claim, prompting the company to contact the police.

A Trail of Ashes and Unanswered Questions

Lancashire Police confirmed both fires were investigated as suspected arson. However, they stated no conclusive evidence had been discovered to identify those responsible. Investigators eventually closed the case, though they emphasized it could be reopened should any fresh leads emerge.

Mike Chesworth recalled getting the devastating call as he and his wife were driving to visit family on 5 August. “I turned the car around and raced back,” he told the BBC. “By the time I got there, my lodge was completely engulfed, and fire crews were everywhere.”

Across the park, resident Alison Porter-Garroch had seen the smoke and rushed to help. But in a cruel twist, her own home soon followed the same fiery fate. “I went back and saw the black smoke pouring from my lodge,” she said tearfully, remembering how she retrieved her parents’ ashes just before the fire consumed everything. “It was horrendous. I stood there watching my home burn.”

Both homes were left completely destroyed, and neither could be lived in again.

Living on a Holiday Park – Or Something More?

Here’s where things get controversial: Wyre Country Park only holds a holiday park licence, which means residents are not legally permitted to live there all year round. Yet according to several former buyers who spoke to Panorama, they were explicitly told they could live there permanently by the park’s management when they purchased their caravans.

The BBC investigation alleged that residents were misled and stripped of their financial security under those false promises—claims directed squarely at David Welch, the director of Exclusive Resorts Ltd. In a hidden-camera segment, an undercover reporter posing as a potential buyer was informed by both a sales manager and Mr. Welch himself that year-round residency was permitted. When confronted later, Welch argued that every sales contract and park sign clearly stated the homes were for holiday use only.

Tensions, Evictions, and a Day Before Disaster

After the Panorama broadcast, relationships between Welch and residents rapidly deteriorated. Disputes erupted over electricity payments and other grievances. By July, the situation had grown tense enough that Exclusive Resorts began formal eviction proceedings against the Chesworths, accusing them of breaching their licence agreements through “serious and persistent misconduct,” including harassment.

The timing has raised eyebrows: the eviction ordered the Chesworths to vacate their home by 4 August — exactly one day before the fires tore through both their property and Porter-Garroch’s. The couple refused to leave at that time, insisting they had a legal right to remain under their lease agreement with the company.

Exclusive Resorts maintains it has “fully cooperated” with the authorities and warned against drawing “irresponsible or baseless conclusions.” For now, the official line is that no foul play can be proven. But for many residents and observers, that answer doesn’t feel sufficient.

Two fires. One day. One long and bitter dispute. Coincidence—or something more sinister?

What do you think: could the timing really have been pure chance, or do you suspect there’s more to this story than meets the eye?
