Securing the Future of Swimming at Llangrannog
Gwersyll yr Urdd Llangrannog has been a beacon of Welsh language education and recreation for decades. Serving children and young people from across Wales, it has also provided essential employment and community facilities for Ceredigion residents.
However, the current facilities fall short of accessibility standards, with disabled users facing barriers. The £2.5 million investment will transform the pool into a modern, accessible space, ensuring everyone can enjoy its benefits.
Siân Lewis, Chief Executive of the Urdd, highlighted the pool's importance, stating that the investment will create a reliable, accessible facility promoting health and wellbeing. It will generate new jobs and ensure wheelchair users and those with limited mobility can fully engage. By reducing its carbon footprint and expanding community access, this redevelopment will leave a lasting positive impact on Llangrannog and the wider community.

Investing Across Wales
The additional £2.5 million will fund a range of innovative projects, including major facility upgrades. This includes developing girls' and grassroots facilities at Dragon Park, Newport, with a new 3G pitch, and supporting Wales Golf's initiatives with the G4D Legacy Fund and National Inclusive Coaching Centre.
Athletics improvements will see equipment upgrades at Leckwith, including new steeplechase barriers and a water jump barrier. The track at the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales will be resurfaced, and sports hall floors at the Active Living Centre in Newport will be improved.
Performance support programs will receive funding, such as Hoci Cymru's Euro 2027 performance support and RYA Cymru Wales' double-handed pathway provision.
Sport Wales will also assist clubs and facilities in reducing energy costs through upgrades like solar panels, battery storage, LED lighting, efficient heating systems, and improved pool equipment. This initiative will benefit facilities and sports clubs across Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Vale of Glamorgan, Wrexham, and Blaenau Gwent, representing a diverse range of sports.
Brian Davies, Sport Wales Chief Executive, expressed gratitude for the additional capital funding, acknowledging the hard work of both Sport Wales staff and government officials. He believes this investment further demonstrates the value placed on sports, with worthwhile projects receiving support across various sports and communities.
On Thursday, the Minister visited the newly refurbished Aberaeron Leisure Centre, made possible by almost £124,000 of Welsh Government funding delivered through Sport Wales. The upgraded sports hall now caters to the Ceredigion Netball League and neighboring school pupils, offering a more inclusive space with line markings for Boccia and Pickleball.
